• 06-Apr-2022 meeting with engineer Brad Grieve

  • On 6 April, a meeting was held. It included Barbara Baker, Bing Frye, Antonio and Brad Grieve (engineer). We walked up the west side of Los Sabinos to view the current situation along the west wall. Brad Grieve, Bing and Antonio were all immediately in agreement that in order to protect the wall a gabion wall should be constructed along the existing wall. A gabion wall consists of interlocking wire cages filled with rocks. It would be built starting below the current ground level. Also, in the same area some excavation of the arroyo is required.
It was soon determined by Bing and Brad Grieve  that there is one small tree between the road and the arroyo adjacent to casa 29 that is directing the water against the wall and should be removed. This and the gabion wall is the minimum work required to safeguard the wall from continued erosion.
Bing and Brad Grieve were of the opinion that if the arroyo is straightened out adjacent to casas 36, 30 and 29 the possibility of future erosion would minimized. This would require the removal of one dead tree and one clump of ferns on the west side of the road. This would allow the road to be moved slightly to the west in this area. On the east side of this area, the earth could then be excavated and put against the wall of LS.
In addition the trench on land in front of LS (west) and  in front of Bugambilias (east) ( land which does not belong to us) should be excavated to allow the runoff from the arroyo to flow to the front of Bugambilias were a culvert would take the water under the road and to the south. LS already has a trench built in front.
Obviously, approval would be required from at least one government department for any of this work.
We walked further up the arroyo and determined that there appears to be construction of two separate developments on the east side of the road and arroyo. One is 3 houses and the other cannot be determined. Brad Grieve strongly advises that we should get the cooperation of these neighbours and others as they will need to use the road for access and will be impacted by the arroyo and may have already talked to the city.

I will ask Veronica to speak to these neighbours and the owner of the land above that and Arroyo Alto condominium and the owner of the eventos on the west of the road. If we can coordinate an approach to the city it will have more impact.
