- 26-Mar-2022 inspection with architect Jaime Hernandez
- On 26 March 2022 Barbara Baker, Steve Sayce, and Veronica Ortiz met with Jaime Hernandez. Mr Hernandez is the architect who was hired to reinforce the west wall in April 2017.
We walked up the road adjacent to the arroyo along the west wall as far as the top of casa #36. North from this point, the property of Los Sabinos turns away from the road and arroyo. It was determined that during the last landslide, the arroyo created a new course in some areas. There is evidence of it undermining the soil adjacent to the property of #36 and 18. In the case of 18, the new course is right against the wall and a hole about 2 meters deep has been created. In other areas, erosion is less due to the existence of large rocks and trees and other vegetation.
Remedial Action: Infill is required along side #36 and #18. This would be soil reinforced with interlocking rocks of varying sizes. It would be sloped away from the wall and the slope of the bottom of the arroyo would be corrected.
Steps to be taken: Veronica is preparing a report to present to Chapala city hall. Mr Hernandez will review this, add to it and add his signature. It was stressed by Veronica and Mr. Hernandez that all residents of Los Sabinos must also sign this report. They said the city is more apt to consider the report if it affects a lot of people. After presentation, the city must reply within 10 days. Then a period of negotiation takes place. The hope is that the city would provide at least machinery and maybe materials and labour. Our arroyo is low priority because there was no damage to property during the last landslide. Remedial work has to be done in the dry season. If it is not undertaken now, the repairs and the cost will be greater after another rainy season.
